Saw palmetto is stated to possess diuretic, urinary antiseptic, endocrinological and anabolic properties. Traditionally, it has been used for chronic or subacute cystitis, catarrh of the genitourinary tract, testicular atrophy, sex hormone disorders and specifically for prostatic enlargement. Modern interest in saw palmetto is focused on its use in the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Saw palmetto is used for treating certain types of prostate infections. It is also sometimes used, in combination with other herbs, to treat prostate cancer.
Some people use saw palmetto for colds and coughs, sore throat, asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and migraineheadache, hair loss. It is also used to increase urine flow (as a diuretic), to promote relaxation (as a sedative), and to enhance sexual drive (as an aphrodisiac).
